Curriculum guide reflection

Write a reflection, a few sentences (3-4) for two of three of the following from the curriculum guide(1)1st paragraph teaching philosophy, 2)Missing work and late work policy, 3)Student responsibilities section.) You can pick any two of the three you wish to respond to. Make sure you have your name down at the bottom to take claim for your work please.

  1. I think that we should have more time to give in the home work. Example: if you were absent for 3 days you only get 3 days to bring in the missing home work but you wouldn’t know what to do because you weren’t there. Well that’s all I’ve got 2 say.

  2. I completely understand what we have to do in case we miss work. However, I think that maybe you should also give one more extra day, including one school day per absence, because maybe the student has an important event (birthday, etc) that they can't miss, and therefore would need more time to complete the assignments. I also think that students who give in their missed work late should get credit for it. I mean, they probably worked equally as hard as the others, and they also might have a perfectly reasonable explanation for handing their work in late.

For the "student responsibilities" paragraph, I have a few questions.
    a) What is graph paper and where can we get it?
    b) Where should we be taking notes in class? In our notebooks or ...?
    c) Can we also e-mail you about the missed work?
    d) If we did tell you that the classes are too easy/difficult what are some of the things that you could do?

  3. Hi,

I think it is extremely important to show up prepared for a class. When a teacher has put in a lot of time and effort to prepare a class, and students forget there pencils, notebooks etc. I would defiantly find that annoying.

Personally I really do not like missing classes, like you said, I would rather do it in class and not have to make it up. I think that MYP has a great rule about missing classes. For how many classes you miss you have that many to make up your work.

    Thanks,
    Blaise S.

  4. For the opening paragraph I like the idea of coming out of this year a better person and problem solver. I think its a fair goal to set for everyone. Its a challenge but it wont keep you up and night if it doesn't work out. I think that its fair to give students the number of days they missed to make up work. Although sometimes making up missed work and doing current assignments can get to be a lot. I think teachers should be flexible in giving at most a days extension.

  5. Hi!

I think that homework missed during days when you are absent is a fair thing, and that you should be given the same number of days to complete the leftover homework. Of course, it's not the most pleasant thing to finally have recovered from a cough and then have tons of homework in the night, so I think that if the student has a good excuse for not doing the homework and asking for an extra day the teacher should be flexible. I also think that teachers should be flexible in the case of a very long absence or a CEESA tournament, and I don't think weekends should be counted as extra days.

I also fully agree with the student responsibility list, students should come prepared to class and ready to learn. That way as a class we can be more efficient and have more fun. However, I think that it's the responsibility of the teacher to give out tardies when needed, so that all students understand that we have to be in class on time.

  6. Hi,

    Coming to class prepared:
I think it is essential to bring a pencil, paper, notebook, textbook or anything else required by the teacher. I also think that it should be forgiven if it is a rare case, but it should never become normal to come unprepared. I think that it is prone to happen at least once to everyone, either you may be in a hurry or you cannot open your locker, sometimes things will get into your way and if it is not a usual case, it should not be a big deal. If by any chance it came to an inconvenience and the student is not prepared, there should be a reserve activity connected to the class for him to do in order for the class not to be wasted, but if the things a student needs are located in his locker, he should be allowed to briefly go get them, again as long as it is not usually happening. If it happens often, disciplinary measures should be taken.

    Missing school:
Missing school is something that has happened to everyone, and like it or not it results in make up work. I believe that the system at ISB is solid, but has some flaws, if the person is away at a ceesa trip, the student should be treated a bit better during make up period, because it would be a shame for people to drop out of ceesa because they cant keep up with school. The work should be done but with an additional day or 2 depending on the amount of work. I strictly disagree with the rule of late work not receiving credit, i think late work should receive a deduction instead of a 0, so for every day late i would remove 1 point from each criterion.

    Sincerely,
    Aleksej.

  7. 1st Paragraph Teaching Philosophy:
I think that your teaching goals and philosophies seem very reasonable and understandable. If I were a teacher, these would be basically the things I would have as goals. I like how a lot of what you wrote about, especially the problem-solvers section doesn't just apply to math, but to life in general.

    Student responsibilities:
These are also very reasonable. If everybody followed these rules alone, your class would be calm, organized and productive. You summed up all the student's responsibilities here, and they apply to all classes.

  8. Hi!

    First/Opening Paragraph:
I think that you have a good point in trying to make everyone who comes out of your class at the end of the year be a better person. We all learn how to multiply, divide, add, subtract, and do algebra some time in our lives, but not always do all of us get a chance to become better people than we were before. Everyone changes in some way every year, but it's not always clear whether they're a better person, or just academically more clever. I also think that it's good that you want us to work well in groups, but also develop well as independent thinkers, too. We can't always be working together in groups, but some time in our lives, we won't always be able to do something by ourselves.

    Missed Classes:
I think that it is fair that you will give us one extra day per day we're absent to complete work that we missed, and I see the logic behind not accepting late work, but sometimes people forget or make mistakes. Maybe, if someone forgets to complete an assignment, or works on it, but doesn't exactly finish it correctly, they could lose marks, but get a second chance so that they wouldn't get a zero on that homework assignment (just a suggestion). Otherwise, I think everything else is very fair.

  9. Opening Paragraph:
I agree with the idea that this year shouldn't be only about math but also about coming out of this course as a better problem solver and even a better person. I agree with the idea that we
shouldn’t always tackle our problems alone, because help is always needed. Another thing that I like, is how we should learn to ask the right questions in order to gain important knowledge.

    Student Responsibilities:
It is really important for a student to know their responsibilities, especially when they are associated with school. The responsibilities that we have in school mostly consist of mostly bringing supplies and doing homework. Even though, these responsibilities might be minor compared to the ones that await us in real life they still help us learn how to grow into young adults.

  10. Coming to Class Prepared:

I think that preparing for class is a very essential thing. Most of the time it will be vital that you have a pencil, notebook (or a piece of paper,) a text book that the teacher will have probably provided for you and any other items you have been told to bring to that particular class. I consider it very rude if you do not come unprepared for example the teacher has taken the liberty of ordering and providing you with a text book you should be considerate and bring it when requested/ needed, however I personally think that if it is a rare occasion where you forget one or the necessary items above with good reason such has your locker is jammed of there are other problems standing in your way. Though if it becomes a regular problem then certain measures should be taken.

    Missed school :
I agree with the rule that as many days as you miss you have to make up school work, however i think that if you have a lot of make up work the teacher should be understanding and depending on the situation give you and extra day or so especially if you were away for the school such as you were participating in a CEESA event. I also think if the asignment was turned in late you shouldn't deduct all points but remove points for as many days it was late.

    Thanks
    Emily

  11. First Paragraph:
I think what your goals for a student to be reasonable it is very important to be a better person. I agree with the fact that you want us to be better problem solvers in math and also in life, i appreciate the effort to teach us.

    Extra Help:
I think it is very thoughtful of you to offer extra help for a student that might be struggling in a subject, i believe that is the exact way a teacher should act.

    Student Responsibilities:
I agree with the students responsibilities i believe if a student knows these policies that the class with be much more prepared and focused on their task.

  12. Hi

    Missing Work:
I think we should turn in the work after the deadline, because if we dont, then what was the point of doing it? If we wont get graded on it. Im not saying we should get graded on every late work we turn in.. but if we are sick and then come back then we should atleast get a couple of days extra so we can do the work and then hand it in to you.

    Student Responsibilities:
I totally agree with the responsibilities you've put in th epackage. cause its really really important that students:
    1. Be in class ON time.
    2. To have ALL there things.
    3. To PARTICIPATE in class.
Its really important that students know all this.. and the other responisbiliities you've added!

  13. Mr Daws I really liked your first paragraph, I think you wrote i well i also like the goals. I appreciate that you want to make us better problem solvers.

I like how we have the same amount of days to do what me missed, But i think it's not fair that we get no credits for turing in assingment after the due date.I think we should get half of the credits.

  14. Hello Mr.Daws,

I chose to write couple sentences based on the 2nd and the 3rd one (missing work and late policy and student responsibibilities section).
    1) As a student, missing works can occur sometimes however when this missing work problem goes on, the teacher should try to develop some issues that the student need, instead of punishing in visicious ways. But I trust the teachers thoughts. In occasionally like Events such as sports music art etc, I prefer that teachers can give extension to students who are responsible... However once again it is based on your decision.

    2) Although there might be constroversial opinions against my ideas but all students must be organized inorder to contributed in class. Though the rules are strict, being prepared gives better affects later on, and also there will be no influence on others. Sometimes to borrow pens and pencils even paper can happen however every day, it might be bit or more annoying. The other thing is to be right on time, and contributing with class mates, which means to respect them...

  15. Hi,
I have chosen to write about the Missed Classes and Student Responsibilities.
Missed Classes: I find that the MYP program has a very fair rule about as many days as you miss is how many you have to make up work. But I find this rule, when it comes to CEESA events negotiable. But I think that when you do travel and miss classes for a CEESA event it is important to keep in mind that you will have homework and assignment to catch up on when you come back but if the trip is quite long, an extra day could be added if necessary. But I don't think this should be for people who only miss a day or two of school. I agree with the fact that point should be taken of if an assignment is handed in late since it is not fair,if not many or no points are taken off, for the people who do hand in their assignments.
    Student Responsibilities:
I completely agree with the fact that you should be on time for class and have all your materials with you because as a teacher it must be very frustrating to have people always coming in late or asking to go get something from their lockers. But exceptions should be allowed for those whose locker are jammed or/and will not open.I think participating is important because it will help the person to know wether the class is too difficult/easy or to slow/fast. I think respecting other, property, etc. is a rule that should always be followed, no questions asked.
I also have a question or two:
1.Will it be possible to turn in assignments over Google Docs or E-mail?
    2. Is both lined AND graph paper mandatory?
    3. If both kinds of paper are necessary is it possible to have a notebook with graph paper and a block of lined paper?

    Thank You,
    Maria L.

  16. 1) I like that you have given extra time if you have missed a day or more. I think it's very fair. I don't understand "late work is not required to be accepted by the teacher".

    2) I like the fact that your going to try and make us better people. To make us better teamworkers is also good(I'm not good in teams). And I like being independent.

  17. For the missing work policy, I think it's fair that for every day you miss you get the same amount of days to make your homework up, but I think that if you then turn in the homework late it shouldn't be a zero, it should just be 10 % of the marks taken off for every late day or something along those lines. That way the student doesn't completely fail the assignment that they handed in late, they just don't do as well as they would have. It's not very fair to come back from some sort of CEESA trip and find out that you have a whole load of homework to do, and then if you don't finish it in a period of 3 or 4 days, you don't get credit for your work.

I agree with your first paragraph - I think it's important to come out of something for the better. Everyone sits through math class from grade 1 to grade 12, and after twelve years of that I think it's nice to have gotten something out of that other than formulas and the ability to do math. Every class is about life - it's not just about working on the subject, it's also about learning how to work together and independently, it's about learning how to compromise and how to cooperate, and it's about learning how to keep yourself organized and prepared for anything that comes your way in life.

  18. Mr Daws I respect that you want us to come out of your class better people which is good because I have had a lot of difficulty in math over the last year. I want to know what your teaching style is because it could help a lot!!

The home work agreement i may not like though because if you are on a CEESA trip representing your school for like 2-3 days i think we should get that amount of time for the missed homework.

I hope we are on the same page if not I'm fine with any conclusion you come to.

  19. Hi Mr. Daws

    1. I agree with the fact that we should finnish off the homework for the amount of days you are absent, but if you finnish your homework or assignments on more days needed, I think we should still get at least some credit.

    2. I agree with the terms in the 1st paragraph and I like the fact that you will try to help us become better math students (I never really had a thing with math).

  20. 1st paragraph
I would very much like it if you could teach me to ask the right questions and to be able to solve problems correctly, to teach me how to be a more independent person, if you could help me in geometry that would be great, but most importantly, I would like it for you to make me a better person. If you could manage that at least some of these could happen, I think it would be better for all my teachers, all my friends, but mostly me.

    Student responsibilities
I think for me this year the 2 most important goals for me (in-school goals) are; first, to bring all my supplies to class, and second, to be on time for class, if I'm late in the morning then I can’t get a tardy because I ride the bus to school, but usually last year I was late for classes mostly in the afternoon. I pretty much agree with all of the rules for our math class in 7B.

  21. I think you should have at least as many days to make up the homework as many days you missed, especially when you had a good reason to be absent (flu, CEESA etc.). There should also be at least 50% percent credit for late work. If it's an important assignment and the student has a good reason to be late then he/she shouldn't get a zero.

Students should always come on time and prepared to class. If they don't have their things or materials, they can't do what they have to do and cannot participate in the lesson.
